Simple Steps: Building confidence in Walsall

Simple Steps is a small community organisation in Birchills, Walsall, that began by offering ESOL lessons for local women. Over time, the group recognised that many of its members also wanted opportunities to be active during the limited free time they had to themselves. With support from the Triathlon Trust, Sport England, Triathlon England and a wide range of local partners, that desire has been transformed into a thriving programme of swimming and cycling opportunities.

Thanks to the commitment of volunteers, and the investment of the Triathlon Trust and partners, Simple Steps has delivered swimming lessons to more than 30 women and supported cycling confidence sessions that are now becoming a regular part of weekly life. Some participants have gone on to train as ride leaders or enrol on the Community Activator Course, equipping them to sustain and grow activities long into the future.

Key outcomes:

  • Over 30 women are now swimming confidently, with lessons extended from five to twelve weeks due to high demand.
  • Weekly cycle sessions now run at Reedswood Park and the Son of Rest Community Centre, with safe spaces for women to ride and bring their children.
  • Several women have been upskilled as leaders, embedding capacity within the community.
  • Improved mental wellbeing, social connection and confidence have been reported consistently across participants.
