About the Triathlon Trust

The Triathlon Trust is the official charity of British Triathlon. We raise funds and invest in programmes that use swim, bike and run to reduce barriers to being active for people and communities across Britain.

Who we are

We believe everyone should have the chance to enjoy the benefits of an active life. As the official charity of British Triathlon, we work with British Triathlon, Triathlon England, Triathlon Scotland and Triathlon Cymru to support programmes that use swim, bike and run to create healthier, more connected communities.

We focus our funding and support on:

  • Places where activity levels are low and opportunities are limited
  • People facing financial, cultural or practical barriers
  • Inclusive programmes that are community-led
  • Pathways that help people grow as leaders, volunteers and athletes
  • Removing practical barriers that can prevent people with strong potential from progressing

Our role is to raise funds, invest wisely and support partners to deliver high-quality programmes that make a lasting difference.

Our story

The Triathlon Trust was founded in 2012 to give people and families across Britain a fun, inclusive introduction to swim, bike and run. Over its first six years, the Trust delivered more than 130,000 Active Days through school events, community festivals and mass participation days. In 2019, more than 22,000 people took part, many experiencing swim, bike and run for the first time.

Following Covid, the Trust took time to reflect on how it could deliver greater long-term impact. In 2023 and 2024, the charity relaunched with a renewed focus on being a sustainable grant maker. Today, we concentrate on place-based projects, working through partners and building programmes embedded in local communities rather than one-off events.

How we work

Place-based approach

We focus our support on a growing network of Active Places where we work with local partners over several years to build activity into everyday life.

Partnership delivery

We do not run programmes alone. We fund and support partners such as British Triathlon, the Home Nations and local organisations who understand their communities best. Together we co-design projects that reflect local needs and build on local strengths.

Grant making and support

As a grant-making charity we provide funding, advice and connections to help programmes succeed. We also support initiatives that develop leaders and volunteers, and we help remove the barriers that can prevent talented people from progressing, whether that is access to equipment, facilities, coaching or competition opportunities.

Our impact

We measure impact through participation numbers, lived experiences and longer-term stories of change. Our early work focused on giving as many people as possible a brilliant first experience of triathlon. Today, we also focus on depth, supporting projects that build confidence, skills and community connections over time. As our portfolio of Active Places grows, we will publish regular updates, insights and evaluations so supporters can see what we are learning and the difference their support makes.

Our people

The Triathlon Trust is governed by a Board of Trustees with experience from sport, charity leadership, education and business. We work closely with British Triathlon and the Home Nations to identify opportunities, manage grants and support projects on the ground. We are proud to have Paralympic champion Lauren Steadman as our long-standing ambassador, helping to inspire people to be active.
